A positive diagnosis of type II diabetes should not induce panic because, although it is a serious condition, diabetics can enjoy a long, healthy and happy living. However, when it comes to diabetes, prevention is an important aspect that should be seriously taken into account, especially if you are at increased risk due to heredity or if you are overweight. Here are some some steps you can take in order to minimize the risk of diabetes.

Control your weight

Obesity is one of the major risk factors for type II diabetes and studies have shown that weight loss can be, in some cases, enough to keep the disease under control. Moreover, even the smallest weight loss can halve the risk of developing diabetes. Therefore, controlling your weight is an important step in preventing diabetes and you can do so by starting to work out more often and to eat less and healthier.

Don’t skip breakfast

Everyone is in a hurry in the morning, but breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it is extremely important in preventing diabetes. If you wait for lunch to finally eat, well, you will trigger a chain reaction that would disrupt insulin levels and blood sugar levels and surely you will eat more, so you should make time to have a balanced breakfast, both to control blood sugar, and to lose weight.

Start moving

Physical inactivity is one of the main factors that favor the development of diabetes and every two hours you spend watching TV instead of performing a physical activity increases the chance of developing diabetes by 14%. Instead, walking for half an hour every day decreases the risk of type II diabetes by 30%, so you should consider doing more exercise in order to maintain your health.

Quit smoking and drinking

People who smoke and consume high amounts of alcohol are more likely to develop diabetes, among other diseases that are related to these nasty bad habits. Therefore, if you are a smoker or you sometimes overpass your cups, you might want to give up on these manners as they can result in diabetes.

Keep a healthy diet

Diet is perhaps the most important aspect in diabetes prevention because the right foods have the ability to control blood sugar levels and to help your body to maintain its health. You should include in your diet fish, nuts, milk, beans, oatmeal, green tea and citrus fruits. Also, avoid fats and sweets in order to control your weight and the sugar levels.
